Choose To Organize or Not To Organize: Making Decisions

I may have difficult decisions to make if I choose to organize.

We can choose to organize or not to organize

We have free will.
If we choose to organize, we have to make decisions about our stuff – our possessions.
We can:
• Keep our stuff, organize in place or redistribute to another location.
• Toss it.
• Give it away or gift it to someone.
Donate it to a charity
• Sell it

Making decisions is difficult sometimes. I always recommend dealing with the easy stuff first, and move on to the more challenging decisions later. What if EVERY decision is a challenge?

If a decision to keep or not to keep is difficult

We have a golden opportunity to choose who we are NOW through the stuff with which we surround ourselves. We have stuff that defined our various stages in life. Are these things memories that conjure up positive thoughts or negative thoughts? Are they reminders of times that make us smile or frown? Will we choose to keep the stuff that moves us forward and still preserve our history? The answers to these questions can help us decide to keep or not.

If we choose to organize: to keep or not to keep

If we organize and keep stuff, where will the item be stored so that you will find it when needed? There are several methods to organizing stuff we keep. If the item is necessary for daily living, then it belongs in a place that can be easily accessed. If the item sentimental, it could be displayed. The same decision applies for digital stuff.

If we choose to organize and not keep an item, where will it go? Many individuals find the act of organizing to de-clutter is cathartic. Will it make someone else smile? Sharing an item that meant much to us previously in our lives can be shared with a relative or a less fortunate individual, or sold to someone who places monetary value on your stuff. If the item is not in good condition, there are places to recycle textiles, technology and other collectibles to prevent adding to landfill.

If we choose not to organize

During the pandemic, a sizeable population of folks organized to keep busy. Some resisted this temptation as this photo went viral. Should I choose to organize?

There is no rule in life that requires one to organize. Organizing, however, can be a creative task. A collection of matchbook covers can be turned into a collage of memories. A collection of wine corks can become a cork board for reminders. You can find so many ideas through browser searches or AI questions.
